Kessho Kannagara Aikido

Aikido is a Japanese martial art rooted in the philosophy of harmony — using fluid, circular movements to redirect an opponent’s energy rather than meeting force with force. Unlike striking-based martial arts, Aikido emphasizes blending, balance, and mindful movement, making it accessible to people of all ages and body types.

For those familiar with yoga, think of Aikido as yoga in motion. Both practices cultivate body awareness, breath control, and a deep connection between mind and body. Where yoga builds this through held postures and stillness, Aikido develops it through dynamic partner movement — training you to stay centered and grounded even when life (literally) pushes back.

The wellness benefits are profound: Aikido improves flexibility, coordination, and core strength, while reducing stress and building mental clarity. Regular practice fosters a calm, focused presence that carries well beyond the mat and into everyday life.

The Kannagara Aikido tradition was founded by Rev. Koichi Barrish-Sensei who continues to teach at his dojo in Kissimi, FL. Kessho Kannagara in Little Rock, AR is taught by Joe Melberg, 4th Dan.
